Franz Grillparzer

1791–1872 · 19th century

Franz Grillparzer was Austria's leading dramatist of the nineteenth century, whose plays, including The Ancestress, King Ottokar's Fortune and Rise and The Waves of Sea and Love, were written largely for the Burgtheater in Vienna. Long hindered by censorship, he was honoured late in life as a national poet.
