Frederick IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

1774–1825 · 19th century

Frederick IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was the last ruler of his line, succeeding his brother Augustus in 1822. Unmarried and in poor health, he died in 1825, and the extinction of the house led to the Ernestine redistribution of 1826, in which Gotha passed to Saxe-Coburg and Altenburg to the former duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
