Gabès
Gabès is a coastal city in south-eastern Tunisia, on the gulf of the same name, built around a large seaside oasis. On the site of the Roman Tacapae, it was an important stop on the route between Ifriqiya and Tripolitania. Around 1097 it became the seat of the Banu Jami, an Arab dynasty of the Banu Hilal, until the Almohads conquered it in 1160. It is now a centre of the chemical and phosphate industry.
