Ganden Monastery

1409 · 15th century · Also known as Ganden

Ganden Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery on a mountain about 40 kilometres east of Lhasa, founded by Tsongkhapa in 1409. It was the first and mother monastery of the Gelug school, whose head, the Ganden Tripa, is its abbot. It was one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Lhasa, was largely destroyed after 1959, and has since been partly rebuilt.
