Densatil

1158 · 12th century · Also known as Densa Thil

Densatil was a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Lhoka region of central Tibet, founded in 1158 by Phagmo Drupa Dorje Gyalpo, a disciple of Gampopa. It became the mother monastery of the Phagdru Kagyu school and the spiritual centre of the Phagmodrupa rulers, who built richly decorated reliquary stupas there. It was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and its gilded sculptures are now scattered in museums.
