Garmul

d. 578 · 6th century

Garmul was a Berber king in western North Africa who attacked Byzantine Africa in the 570s, killing several imperial commanders, including the praetorian prefect Theodore. In 578 the Byzantine general Gennadius defeated and killed him. His campaigns showed the continuing strength of the Berber kingdoms beyond Byzantine control.
