Gautami Balashri

2nd century CE · 2nd century

Gautami Balashri was a Satavahana queen, mother of Gautamiputra Satakarni. Her Nashik cave inscription, made in the reign of her grandson Vasishthiputra Pulumavi, praises her son as a destroyer of the Shakas, Yavanas and Pahlavas and an upholder of the four varnas, and records her gift of a cave to Buddhist monks. It is a key source for the dynasty's history.
