Ge Hong

283–343 · 4th century

Ge Hong was a Chinese scholar, alchemist and Daoist writer of the Eastern Jin period from the region south of the Yangtze. His Baopuzi (The Master Who Embraces Simplicity) gathered teachings on alchemy, longevity and the pursuit of immortality, alongside essays on government and society. He also compiled biographies of immortals and a handbook of emergency remedies, one of which later inspired the discovery of artemisinin as a treatment for malaria.
