Gedaliah

6th century BCE · 6th century BCE

Gedaliah son of Ahikam was a Judahite official whom the Babylonians appointed governor of Judah after the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 or 586 BCE. He governed from Mizpah and urged the survivors to serve Babylon, but within months he was assassinated by Ishmael son of Nethaniah, a member of the royal family. Fearing Babylonian reprisals, many Judahites then fled to Egypt; the Fast of Gedaliah still marks his death.
