General People's Congress

1982– · 20th century

The General People's Congress is a Yemeni political party founded in 1982 by President Ali Abdullah Saleh in North Yemen. After unification in 1990 it remained the ruling party, winning every parliamentary election until 2011, and served as the main vehicle of Saleh's patronage. After his death in 2017 it split into factions aligned with the Houthis and with the recognised government.
