Houthi movement

1990s– · 20th century · Also known as Ansar Allah, Houthis

The Houthi movement, officially Ansar Allah, is a Zaydi Shia political and armed movement from the Saada region of northern Yemen, named after its founder Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi. After six wars with the government from 2004 to 2010, it seized Sanaa in September 2014 with help from forces loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, and it has since ruled most of the populous north, backed by Iran.
