George II of Brieg

1523–1586 · 16th century · Also known as George II of Brzeg

George II of Brieg was a Silesian Piast duke who ruled Brzeg from 1547. A Lutheran prince, he made an inheritance treaty with Brandenburg, rebuilt the castle of Brzeg in Renaissance style with a gallery of Piast portraits, and founded a gymnasium. His careful rule made the small duchy one of the best-administered in Silesia.
