Gherardo Appiani
Gherardo Appiani was lord of Pisa who in 1399 sold the city to Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan while keeping Piombino, Elba and nearby islands for himself. This created the lordship, later principality, of Piombino, which his family ruled until the early 17th century.
