Gilgit Agency

1877–1947 · 19th century

The Gilgit Agency was a British political agency in the far north of the Indian empire, set up in 1877 and permanently from 1889, to watch the passes towards Russian Central Asia. It supervised the states of Hunza and Nagar and the surrounding valleys under the suzerainty of Jammu and Kashmir. Leased to Britain in 1935, it passed to Pakistan after a local revolt in 1947.
