Goejanverwellesluis

1787 · 18th century

Goejanverwellesluis is a lock and hamlet on the Hollandse IJssel near Gouda, in South Holland. On 28 June 1787 Patriot militiamen stopped Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia there as she travelled to The Hague to rally support for her husband, Stadtholder William V. Her brother, King Frederick William II of Prussia, used the incident as a pretext to invade the Republic in September 1787 and restore the stadtholder.
