Golden Gate (Kyiv)

c. 1037 · 11th century · Also known as Golden Gate of Kyiv, Golden Gate of Kiev

The Golden Gate was the main ceremonial entrance of medieval Kyiv, built under Yaroslav the Wise around 1037 as part of the city's new fortifications, with a church above its passage. It was badly damaged when the Mongols sacked Kyiv in 1240 and later fell into ruin. The surviving remains were enclosed in a reconstruction in 1982. The gate served as a model for the Golden Gate of Vladimir.
