Golden Urn

1793 · 18th century

The Golden Urn was a method introduced by the Qing Qianlong Emperor in 1793 for choosing high Tibetan and Mongolian reincarnate lamas, including the Dalai and Panchen Lamas. The names of candidates were written on slips placed in an urn and one was drawn by lot under the supervision of the Qing ambans. Intended to curb manipulation by noble families, it was used in some recognitions and set aside in others.
