Institution
Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is the title of the leading figure of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, later the head of the Tibetan government. The institution itself arose in the sixteenth century. The site traces its relationship with Chinese imperial rule to the Yuan Dynasty's patronage of Tibetan Buddhist lamas, which set the pattern for later Sino-Tibetan relations.
