Golkar

1964– · 20th century · Also known as Party of Functional Groups, Partai Golongan Karya

Golkar is an Indonesian political party that began in 1964 as an army-backed federation of functional groups opposed to the Communist Party. Under Suharto's New Order it served as the regime's electoral vehicle, winning every parliamentary election from 1971 to 1997 with the support of the army and civil service. After Suharto's fall in 1998 it reinvented itself as an ordinary party and has remained one of the largest forces in Indonesian politics.
