1838–1897 · 19th century

Goto Shojiro was a samurai of the Tosa domain in Japan and a leading statesman of the Meiji era. Drawing on the ideas of Sakamoto Ryoma, he persuaded his lord Yamauchi Toyoshige to urge the shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu to return power to the emperor, which Yoshinobu did in 1867. He later served in Meiji governments and helped Itagaki Taisuke found the Liberal Party in 1881.
