Takechi Hanpeita

1829–1865 · 19th century

Takechi Hanpeita was a samurai and swordsman of the Tosa domain on Shikoku who in 1861 founded the Tosa Loyalist Party, dedicated to restoring imperial rule and expelling foreigners. His followers assassinated the domain's reforming minister Yoshida Toyo in 1862, and for a time the party influenced court politics in Kyoto. When the former lord Yamauchi Toyoshige turned against the loyalists, Takechi was imprisoned and ordered to commit seppuku in 1865.
