Grand Turk Island
Grand Turk Island is the main island of the Turks Islands in the Caribbean and seat of government of the Turks and Caicos Islands. From the late 17th century Bermudian salt rakers worked its salt ponds, and its merchants' resentment of taxes levied from Nassau led Britain to separate the islands from the Bahamas in 1848.
