Granville Sharp

1735–1813 · 18th century

Granville Sharp was an English scholar and campaigner, one of the first British activists for the abolition of the slave trade. He brought legal cases on behalf of enslaved Africans, including that of James Somerset in 1772. With the Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor he organised the settlement of the Province of Freedom in Sierra Leone in 1787, and he later helped found the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
