Bunce Island
Bunce Island is a small island in the Sierra Leone River, upstream from Freetown. From the 1670s it held a fortified British slave-trading post, run in the 18th century by London merchants such as Grant, Oswald and Company, which shipped tens of thousands of captive Africans across the Atlantic, many to South Carolina and Georgia. Its ruins are now a protected historic site.
