Gregory of Tours

c. 538–594 · 6th century

Gregory of Tours was a Gallo-Roman bishop of Tours from 573 and the author of the Histories, often called the History of the Franks. His work is the main source for Clovis and the Merovingian kings, and for many small kingdoms and rulers of 5th- and 6th-century Gaul that are otherwise almost unknown. He also records events such as Hygelac's raid on Frisia.
