Gregory the Illuminator

c. 257–c. 331 · 4th century · Also known as Saint Gregory the Illuminator, Grigor Lusavorich

Gregory the Illuminator was the founder and first head of the Armenian Church. According to tradition he was imprisoned for years in a pit at Khor Virap by King Tiridates III, then healed and converted the king, so that Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century, traditionally in 301. Consecrated bishop at Caesarea, he organised the church, and his descendants held its leadership for generations.
