Gregory the Patrician
Gregory the Patrician was the Byzantine exarch of Africa and a relative of the Heraclian dynasty. Opposing the Monothelete religious policy of Constans II, he proclaimed himself emperor in 646. He was killed in 647 when an Arab army defeated him at Sufetula (Sbeitla) in present-day Tunisia, the first major Arab invasion of the province.
