Guan Zhong

c. 720–645 BCE · 7th century BCE · Also known as Guan Yiwu

Guan Zhong was chief minister of the State of Qi under Duke Huan from 685 BCE until his death in 645 BCE. His reforms of administration, taxation and the army, and state management of salt and iron, made Qi the first hegemon of the Spring and Autumn period. The Guanzi, a later compilation, bears his name, and Confucius praised him for defending the Zhou world against outside peoples.
