Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay is a large bay on the south-eastern coast of Brazil, on whose shores stand the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. In 1555 French settlers under Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon founded France Antarctique on an island in the bay. The Portuguese expelled them in 1560–1567 and founded Rio de Janeiro, which grew into the colonial capital of Brazil.
