Guayana Province

Guayana Province was a Spanish colonial province covering the lower Orinoco basin and the lands to the south, in present-day eastern Venezuela. Its capital, Santo Tomé de Guayana, was moved in 1764 to Angostura, now Ciudad Bolívar. Joined to the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777, it stayed royalist until patriot forces under Manuel Piar and Simón Bolívar took it in 1817 and made it their base.
