Maracaibo
Maracaibo is the second-largest city of Venezuela, on the strait linking Lake Maracaibo to the Gulf of Venezuela. Refounded in 1574, it was the capital of a Spanish province of the same name, which joined the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777 and stayed royalist early in the independence wars. The discovery of oil around the lake in the early 20th century made it the centre of Venezuela's oil industry.
