Gulf of Nicoya

The Gulf of Nicoya is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the north-west coast of Costa Rica, separating the Nicoya peninsula from the mainland. Its islands and shores were home to Chorotega chiefdoms at the time of the Spanish conquest, and Gil González Dávila's expedition reached the area in 1522. Its main port today is Puntarenas.
