Hafizullah Amin

1929–1979 · 20th century

Hafizullah Amin was an Afghan communist leader of the Khalq faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, which seized power in the Saur Revolution of April 1978. In September 1979 he ousted his rival Nur Muhammad Taraki, who was then killed, and became president. His brutal rule and failure to contain a growing insurgency led the Soviet Union to invade in December 1979, when Soviet special forces killed him in his palace.
