Harar

Harar is a walled city in eastern Ethiopia, a centre of Islamic learning and trade. It became the capital of the Adal Sultanate and the base for campaigns against the Christian Ethiopian state. Its walls were built after the Adal wars, and the city remained a leading centre of the region after the sultanate's decline.
