Harpagus

6th century BCE · 6th century BCE

Harpagus was a Median noble who, according to Herodotus, saved the infant Cyrus from death ordered by King Astyages and later helped Cyrus overthrow him around 550 BCE. As Cyrus' general he conquered the Greek cities of Ionia, Caria and Lycia after the fall of Lydia, around 545–540 BCE. The Phocaeans and Teians fled by sea rather than submit, founding new colonies, while the people of Xanthos fought to the death.
