Helier de Carteret

c. 1532–1581 · 16th century

Helier de Carteret was a Jersey nobleman, Seigneur of Saint Ouen, who colonised the Channel Island of Sark. In 1565 Elizabeth I granted him the island as a fief on condition that he keep it settled with at least forty men able to defend it against pirates and the French. He divided Sark into forty holdings, laying the foundations of its feudal constitution, which lasted until 2008.
