Henri Alexis Brialmont

1821–1903 · 19th century

Henri Alexis Brialmont was a Belgian military engineer and general, the leading fortress designer of his age. He planned the fortifications of Antwerp as the national redoubt and, in the 1880s, the rings of concrete forts around Liège and Namur. He also worked on defences for Romania. The Liège forts delayed the German advance in August 1914 before falling to heavy siege artillery.
