Hethum I

1213–1270 · 13th century

Hethum I was king of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia from 1226 to 1270, founder of the Hethumid line of kings. He submitted to the Mongols and travelled to their capital Karakorum in 1254 to secure an alliance against the Mamluks. The alliance brought gains in Syria, but the Mamluks devastated Cilicia in 1266, and Hethum abdicated in favour of his son Leo II in 1269.
