Hiiumaa

Also known as Dagö

Hiiumaa is the second-largest island of Estonia, lying in the Baltic Sea north of Saaremaa, and known in German and Swedish as Dagö. Conquered by German crusaders in the 13th century, it belonged to the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek, then to Sweden and from 1710 to Russia, and had a Swedish-speaking community until the late 18th century. Its Kõpu lighthouse, first lit in 1531, is among the oldest working lighthouses in the world.
