Hongkou
Hongkou is a district of Shanghai north of Suzhou Creek. An American settlement was established there in 1848 and merged with the British settlement in 1863 to form the International Settlement. In the early 20th century it housed a large Japanese community, and during the Second World War the Japanese confined Jewish refugees from Europe to a ghetto in the district.
