Huarpa culture
The Huarpa culture flourished in the Ayacucho basin of the central Peruvian highlands in the first half of the 1st millennium CE. Its people farmed terraced hillsides with the help of irrigation canals and made distinctive painted pottery. Huarpa settlements, such as Ñawinpukyo, formed the local base from which the Wari Empire developed around 600 CE.
