Hukbalahap

1942–1954 · 20th century · Also known as Huks, Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon

The Hukbalahap was a communist-led guerrilla army of peasants in central Luzon, Philippines, founded in 1942 to fight the Japanese occupation. After the war its fighters, denied recognition and pressed by landlords, rose against the government of the new Philippine republic. The rebellion was defeated in the early 1950s through military reform and land offers under Ramon Magsaysay, and its leader Luis Taruc surrendered in 1954.
