Hundred Days' Reform

1898 · 19th century · Also known as Hundred Days Reform, Hundred Days

The Hundred Days' Reform was a programme of modernising reforms launched by the Guangxu Emperor in 1898, covering education, administration and the economy. It was ended after about a hundred days by a conservative coup backed by the Empress Dowager Cixi. Its failure is a key episode in the decline of the Qing Empire.
