Guangxu Emperor

1871–1908 · 19th century

The Guangxu Emperor was a late ruler of the Qing Empire who reigned in the late nineteenth century under the strong influence of the Empress Dowager Cixi. In 1898 he backed the Hundred Days' Reform, which was halted by a conservative coup, after which he was kept under house arrest. His failed reforms are a key episode in the decline of the Qing Empire.
