Ijtihad
Ijtihad is the Islamic legal concept of independent reasoning by a qualified scholar to reach a ruling where scripture does not give a clear answer. It played an important part in the development of Islamic law. Early caliphs of the Rashidun Caliphate exercised such reasoning in governing a rapidly growing state.
