Isaac II Angelos

1156–1204 · 12th century

Isaac II Angelos was Byzantine emperor from 1185 to 1195 and again from 1203 to 1204. Brought to power by a revolt against Andronikos I, he faced the Bulgarian rising that founded the Second Bulgarian Empire and failed to recover Cyprus from Isaac Komnenos. Deposed and blinded by his brother Alexios III, he was restored by the Fourth Crusade and overthrown again in 1204.
