1918 · 20th century

The Isla refinery is an oil refinery on the Schottegat harbour of Willemstad, Curaçao, opened by Royal Dutch Shell in 1918 to process Venezuelan crude oil. It dominated the island's economy for much of the 20th century. From 1985 it was leased by the Curaçao government to Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, which stopped operating it in 2019.
