Itsukushima

Also known as Miyajima

Itsukushima, popularly known as Miyajima, is an island in Hiroshima Bay in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, rebuilt by Taira no Kiyomori in the 12th century, whose great torii gate appears to float at high tide. The island was the site of the Battle of Miyajima in 1555, and the shrine is a World Heritage Site.
