Itza people

Also known as Itza Maya

The Itza are a Maya people of the Petén lakes in northern Guatemala. Their traditions trace them to Chichen Itza in Yucatán, after whose decline they moved south and founded the kingdom of Nojpetén. They remained independent of Spain until 1697, the last Maya kingdom to fall, and a few speakers of their language survive around Lake Petén Itzá.
