Izamal
Izamal is a town in the Mexican state of Yucatán, built over a large Maya city whose pyramids, among them Kinich Kak Moo, are some of the largest in the peninsula. A pilgrimage centre of the god Itzamna, it belonged to the Chel province after the fall of Mayapan. In the 1550s the Franciscans built the Convent of San Antonio de Padua on top of one of its pyramids.
